China and Colombia reiterated growing trade relations as Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who many expect to take over the Presidency from Hu Jintao in 2012, met Colombian Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez.
Chinese official statistics show that trade between China and Colombia reached USD4.1 bn in 2008, up 22 per cent from 2007, and Chinese total investment in Colombia is valued at USD700m.
Colombia's La Opinion newspaper said that Xi expressed concern at the disequilibrium in trade between the two nations, and that Chinese investment in Colombia is focused almost exclusively in infrastructure, hydrocarbons, agro-industry and biofuels. The report added that Xi "confirmed that China will raise its efforts to lobby for Colombia to join APEC." The meeting in Beijing was also used to announce a Latin America-China trade summit, which will take place in Colombia next November.
