TCL To Ramp Up LCD Production For China Market

Following on the heels of Korean manufacturers Samsung and LG both announcing a ramping up of LCD TV production in China, local television and phone maker TCL says it is setting up a new assembly line in Huizhou, Guangdong province, to "help the company make sizable inroads in the liquid crystal display (LCD) market."

The new manufacturing plant will boast an annual production capacity of eight million display modules and five million TV units, TCL says. "The enhanced capacity will help fuel our global expansion plans," Li Dongsheng, Chairman and CEO of TCL, told China Daily.

TCL expects its LCD production volume to exceed 7.5 million units this year, up from 4.2 million units in 2008. The company is now focusing on growing domestic demand following a fall of 26.44 per cent in its overseas sales in the first half of 2009. "We started to feel the pressure from the third quarter of last year," Li said. "We are now learning to live with the realities like lower demand and reduced purchasing power." TCL's domestic business grew 12 per cent in the first half of 2009.
